Unfiltered Mornings: Not Fancy, Just Necessary

Tell us about your morning routine.

If you asked me to describe my morning routine in a single word, I wouldn’t use aesthetic, optimized, or product-filled.

I’d use calm.

The truth is, no two mornings in my house are ever identical. One day feels effortless, like a warm cup of tea enjoyed in quiet peace. The next feels like trying to catch a moving train. Over time, I’ve realized that how my morning unfolds is almost entirely a mirror of two things: how well I took care of myself the day before—hydration, food, and decent sleep—and what mood my toddler brings into the world when his eyes open. Because let’s be honest: when he wakes up, the real day begins.

Still, amidst the unpredictability, there is an anchor. An average, everyday rhythm that keeps our home grounded.

The Quiet Hour (5:00 AM – 6:00 AM)

My body clock has settled into a natural wake-up window between 5:00 AM and 5:30 AM—unless, of course, I bargained with my sleep the night before.

When I open my eyes, I don’t jump straight out of bed. I give myself two or three minutes just to lie still, breathe, and wake up happy rather than disoriented. My son is usually still sound asleep beside me, so I quietly smooth out the blankets around him, step out of bed, and drink a full glass of water.

For the next hour, the house belongs to me.

I practice a strict rule: one hour of quiet. No heavy talking, no loud noises, no scrolling. Just silent, deliberate preparation. I gather what we need for the first half of the day, brainstorm breakfast, and sometimes read a few pages of a book. Because I start my work day early, workouts don’t happen here—they are reserved for later in the day (on the days they happen at all).

Around 6:00 AM, I shift into my professional zone. I spend an hour mapping out my tasks, prioritizing my workload, and organizing my focus so I don’t feel overwhelmed once meetings and notifications start rolling in. I check emails and flag anything high-priority—though if something has a tight deadline, I usually try to tackle it the night before or right in this window to clear the deck.

Cuddles, Breakfast, and the Toddler Shift (7:00 AM – 8:00 AM+)

Between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM, the quiet hours end. My son wakes up. The first few minutes after he opens his eyes are non-negotiable: cuddles, quiet chatter, and connection. I’ve learned that setting a happy, calm tone in those first moments makes a world of difference for his entire day—and mine.

From there, we ease into the morning together:

We make breakfast as a team. (Since he eats lunch with us at home after school, that’s one less morning headache on my plate!)

We try to balance work and family time. Over the next hour, I weave between my tasks and spending time with him. While I get some focused work done, he often heads out for a quick morning walk with his dad to soak up some sunlight or enjoy a little one-on-one time.

School prep. We get him dressed, packed, and off to school with as little rush as possible.

Once he is at school, I transition directly into deep focus work, riding the wave of energy created by a quiet start.

It’s Not Fancy—It’s a Need

My routine doesn’t involve a 10-step skincare ritual, a 5:00 AM cold plunge, or two hours of uninterrupted journaling. It’s simple, quiet, and functional. But for us, it isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.

If my morning turns chaotic, it ripples through every hour that follows. A peaceful start protects my sanity, sets my son up for a gentle day, and gives me the mental space to be both a present parent and a focused professional.

And on the weekends? The pace drops even lower. It’s just the three of us curled up on the couch, sharing stories, reading books, and taking all the time in the world.

Over to You

Mornings will never be perfect, and they certainly won’t always look the same. But as long as we protect the calm where we can, that’s more than enough.

Now, tell me about your mornings! Are you an early bird who thrives on quiet solitude, or is your wake-up time more of a chaotic relay race with kids, coffee, and running out the door? What’s the one non-negotiable thing that keeps your morning grounded? I’d love to hear how you start your day in the comments below!
