If you could go back in time and give your younger self advice, what would it be?
If I could travel back in time to talk to my younger self, my advice would be simple: stop worrying about everything, and choose your conversations wisely.
Looking back, my younger self spent far too much time consumed by worry over the smallest details. I constantly obsessed over what people said to me and replayed every single word I said to others. But worrying never solved a single problem. All it did was create unnecessary tension.
When you let anxiety build up like that, it starts to take over. You become defensive. Every time someone says something you don’t agree with, an internal alarm goes off, urging you to answer back immediately and prove your point. It is well said, “It is not your responsibility to correct every false version of you that exists in someone else’s head.”
Over time, I’ve realized how exhausting that cycle is. Saying something in the heat of the moment, only to run it through your head a thousand times afterward—overanalyzing what was said and drafting the “perfect” delayed response—is a deeply stressful and harmful conversation to have with yourself.
I have learned to speak only when it is truly needed. This shift isn’t about being passive or withdrawing from people; it’s about finding genuine inner peace.
Not every conversation requires your contribution, and learning to identify which ones do is a superpower. Silence often saves you from a world of unwanted mental disturbance.
The Weight of Words You Can’t Take Back
The truth is, the regret of saying the wrong thing is heavy and difficult to move past. Once words leave your mouth, they linger. Words spoken in anger or defensiveness can stay with someone forever, no matter how close or loving the relationship becomes later on. In the same way, hurtful words said to me years ago still echo in my mind.
So instead of pouring energy into constant worry or feeling the need to defend every stance, my advice to my younger self—and to anyone listening today—is this: focus on working on yourself, let go of the need to respond to everything.
